Parque Natural de El Hondo (in Valencian, Parc Natural de El Fondo) is a major protected wetland. A nature reserve in the province of Alicante, southeast Spain. It is one of the most important natural areas in the Valencian Community for birdlife and biodiversity

The park is located between the municipalities of Elche and Crevillent. Extending into parts of Catral and Dolores in the Vega Baja del Segura and Baix Vinalopó regions. 

It was officially declared a Natural Park by the Generalitat Valenciana in 1988 Protected under both the Ramsar Convention (wetlands of international importance) and the EU Birds Directive as a Special Protection Area (ZEPA).

Landscape & Ecology

The park occupies roughly 2,400–2,500 hectares and is characterised by several large lagoons and reservoirs known as Levante (about 450 ha) and Poniente (about 650 ha). Originally developed for irrigation but now naturalised. Salt marshes, reedbeds, and agricultural lands surrounding the wetland, and remnants of the ancient Albufera of Elche, a coastal lagoon system that once covered a much larger area before being drained and converted for agriculture centuries ago.  

Wildlife & Birdwatching

El Hondo is renowned for its birdlife and is a top destination for wildlife observation in eastern Spain. Home to hundreds of bird species, including many migratory and endangered birds. Highlights include marbled duck, white-headed duck, herons, avocets, stilts, and birds of prey like the marsh harrier and greater spotted eagle. Other fauna includes fish (e.g., eel, mullet), amphibians, and even the endangered Spanish toothcarp. The park’s diverse habitats support both nesting populations and migratory stopovers.

Visiting the Park

Visitors can enjoy a well highlighted walking trails and cycling routes of varying lengths, including accessible paths and bird hides. Birdwatching platforms and quiet areas ideal for photography or nature study.  A visitor interpretation centre near San Felipe Neri that offers educational displays about the park’s ecosystems. Aslo easy parking and access from the Alicante–Murcia motorway via Crevillent.

Parque Natural de El Hondo (Parc Natural de El Fondo) is one of the largest and most ecologically significant wetlands in the Valencian Community. Protecting critical bird habitats at local, national and international levels. It ffers a peaceful natural escape near the Costa Blanca coast, suitable for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. 

It is an extraordinary sanctuary of wildlife and peace.
